I’m Sean Connolly, a realism tattoo artist at Rising Tide Tattoo in Canfield, Ohio, near Youngstown. My black and grey work uses light, shadow and contrast to give faces, animals and custom scenes depth.

The design
Clear shapes.
Strong contrast.
A realism tattoo needs more than detail. The main subject has to read clearly, the light needs a direction, and the dark areas need enough separation to hold the composition together. I build the piece around those decisions before adding smaller textures.
My work includes animal portraits, expressive faces, horror, cinematic imagery and illustrative realism. Bring me the subject and the parts of the idea that matter most. I will work out the composition in the same style you see in my portfolio.
Placement and size are part of the design. A forearm, upper arm, leg and back give a subject different room to breathe. If the idea has several elements, tell me which one should be the focus so I can plan the space around it.

Before you book
Bring the idea.
Leave room to design.
Send references for the subject, mood or lighting you like, along with the placement and approximate size. Photographs of the body area help, especially when there are existing tattoos nearby.
You do not need a finished design before you book. Tell me what must be included and where you are flexible. Review the portfolio first so the project starts with a clear fit between your idea and my work.
